A Brief History... Middlewich Cricket Club

The early records of the cricket club show that from 1883 the cricket ground was not at its current location but on the site of the new cemetery on Finney’s Lane.

In 1910 the club moved to its current location at Haddenhurst, these days commonly referred to as Haddon Field. The brick-built pavilion was ready at the time of the switch and was further extended to its current size in 1980.

From 1946 to ‘48 a set of deeds were drafted and enacted leaving the ground in trust to the cricket club. Trustees were appointed and their successors continue to ensure that cricket is played at Haddon Field.

The ground is a fabulous cricket venue, being exceptionally flat and picturesque. However, it wasn’t always such. In 1970/71 the ground was subject to a major re-modeling to its current condition using a substantial earthworks scheme funded by the Brine Subsidence Compensation Board. The residual slopes at its boundaries are a testimony to its former inclines.

From the late ‘40s until ‘78 the club played in the Manchester & District Cricket Association. In 1979 the club joined the Cheshire Cricket League and quickly proved their worthiness by winning Division 2 Championship in 1982, going on to win the Division 1 Championship the following season. Further successes followed with the 1st and 2nd XI’s winning their respective league titles in a memorable 2003 season. By this time the cricket structure within the county had been streamlined hence the club was rewarded with a promotion to the Cheshire County Cricket League, picking up two Cheshire Shield knock out titles. By 2014 the club had reached their highest ever status with promotion to the 1st Division of the CCCL.

Junior cricket has been played at the club since the 1970s for under 17s age group, but it is only over the past 20 years, the club has been running junior teams at several age groups - under 9, 11, 13 and 15 teams playing in the South Cheshire Junior Cricket League. In 2018 the ‘All Stars’ initiative was launched by the ECB as an introduction to cricket for 5 – 8 year olds. It is a fabulous and rewarding sight to see so many local youngsters and their parents making use of the local cricket club at Friday evening practice sessions through the summer.

For many years the club has organised an annual Bonfire Night and Fireworks event and in 2018 and 2019 the club has organised extremely successful summer events- ‘Fiesta on the Field’. Both have proved very popular within the town and raised much needed revenue for the club.

We are always looking for new players, find out more on our website.
