First, let me introduce myself – I’m Bill Walmsley, Middlewich Town Mayor 2018-2019, and I was elected Mayor a few months ago by my fellow Councillors. Being Mayor of a lovely town like Middlewich can be tremendous fun, but it’s also very time-consuming. My wife and Mayoress, Bernice, was Mayor five years ago so I knew what it involved.
What does a Mayor do?
As first citizen of the town, the first job is to represent the town. This can be at events in Middlewich such as the Remembrance Parade, presenting prizes at a local school, opening new businesses and facilities (like Fountain Fields this summer – that made me so proud!) or at Civic events in neighbouring towns.
One of my duties is to raise funds for local good causes. This year I have chosen Middlewich Additional Needs Network, Middlewich Good Neighbours and all the Uniformed Groups in Middlewich. All will receive a share of all the funds I raise during my year in office and will no doubt use it to improve their services, helping our town’s community.
Another aspect of a Town Mayor’s duties is as Leader of the Council. I chair meetings of the full council, which meets once a month. There are 12 Councillors, most of whom serve on several of the Council’s committees – these include Finance, Policy & Governance; Events & Communications; Assets; Personnel; and Planning. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are members of all committees, so it makes for busy evenings.
What’s coming up?
I’ve got several fundraisers in the lead up to Christmas:
A Sportsman’s Dinner at the Kinderton Hotel on Friday 30th November, A Christmas Shopping Event at Victoria Hall on Thursday 6th December and A Wine Tasting at Hopley House on Friday 7th December. Details of all these can be obtained from the Town Council firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01606 833434.
I will also be switching on the Christmas Lights on Friday 23rd November and attending the Over 70s Christmas Party, the Tree of Lights Ceremony and a Carol Service – I hope to see some of you at these events.
Bill Walmsley, Middlewich Town MayorIn the meantime, I’d like to wish all Middlewich residents a very merry Christmas and all the very best for 2019.
